Charleston Ballet Theatre, which celebrates its 20th anniversary this season as South Carolina's world-class ballet company, is directed by Don and Patricia Cantwell and boasts the award-winning choreography of resident choreographer, Jill Eathorne Bahr. Over the past several years, the 16+ dancers of the company have toured widely, from Maine and New York to Ohio, Indiana and Michigan, to venues throughout the South.In addition to performing works by Twyla Tharp, George Balanchine, Eddie Toussaint, David Parsons, and other prominent choreographers, the troupe features the ballets of Jill Eathorne Bahr. Miss Bahr, recipient of two Choreographic Fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts, has ballets in the repertories of the Boston Ballet, Eugene Ballet, Indianapolis Ballet Theatre, Ballet Omaha, Alabama Ballet, and Joffrey II Dancers, among others.For the holidays, the company will again tour the ever popular, full-length "Nutcracker," choreographed to the familiar Tchaikovsky score by Miss Bahr. Recent tours have taken this production to Alabama, Georgia, North Carolina, Virginia and West Virginia, Maryland, Ohio, several venues in Florida including repeat engagements at the Jackie Gleason Theatre of Performing Arts in Miami Beach, and last season to Michigan where the company performed with the Midland Symphony. Tour availability for "The Nutcracker" runs from mid November through December (except for the second week of December). "The Nutcracker" can use a number of local children, which the company will audition, train, and costume with the help of a local dance instructor. Other full-length ballets available next season include Jill Bahr's productions of “Dracula” (fall, 2008), “Carmen” (winter, 2009), and the new "Camelot” (spring, 2009). In addition, the troupe will tour an "All American Evening" that features several of the company’s most popular one-act ballets such as Jill Bahr’s “A Streetcar Named Desire” and “Sisters of Swing - The Andrews Sisters” which traces the lives of Maxene, Patty and LaVerne. A second repertory program also available for touring is “A Tribute to Balanchine” which features George Balanchine’s “Who Cares?" (Gershwin).
