St. Petersburg Classic Ballet TheatreThe Saint Petersburg Classic Ballet Theatre, under the artistic direction of prima ballerina, Marina Medvetskaya, is one of St. Petersburg's most well-respected ballet companies.  Since its founding in 1996, the troupe has performed to acclaim throughout Russia, the states of the former Soviet Union, England and Scandinavia, and beginning with its North American debut during the 2001-2002 season, to more than 100 cities in the U.S. and Canada.  The company is now planning its ninth annual tour of North America for the 2009-2010 season.

During November, 2009, and January though mid February, 2010, the company of 12 soloists and principal dancers will offer "A Classical Ballet Gala" that may include such group works as dances from Petipa's "Pakhita," Peggy Willis's full-company ballet, "Beethoven: A Classical Inspiration," and a new ballet choreographed to the music of Gershwin.  Also featured will be familiar pas de deux and solos from "Swan Lake," "Don Quixote," "Le Corsaire," "The Sleeping Beauty" and "The Dying Swan."St. Petersburg Classic Ballet

In addition to "A Classical Ballet Gala," the Saint Petersburg Classic Ballet will also tour its new full-length production of "The Nutcracker" during December, 2009. This production features 16 soloists from St. Petersburg Classic Ballet, approximately eight dancers from the company's U.S. tour producer, the Willis Ballet of Panama City, Florida, as well as local children which the company will help train in your community.

The company founder and director, Marina Medvetskaya, is a disciple of the legendary premier danseur and choreographer, Vakhtang Chaboukiani.  She is the former Prima Ballerina of the Tbilisi State Academic Opera and Ballet Theatre, where she danced all the leading roles in the classical and contemporary ballet repertoire, as well as working with Alexander Plesetsky and the Bolshoi’s Mikhail Lavrovsky.  Her company was awarded the Amber Necklace, the equivalent of the Gold Medal, at the National Ballet Competition in Kalingrad in 1999.

The artists in her company, many of whom have been trained in the exacting classical technique of the Kirov Ballet's Vaganova Ballet Academy, have previously danced with the finest ballet companies of St. Petersburg, including the Kirov, The Maly and the St. Petersburg Ballet Theatre of the late Askold Makarov.
