Kenichi Ebina

Quotes

“Kenichi Ebina moves his body in a manner that appears to defy the limits imposed by the human skeleton. He combines breakdancing and hip-hop with mime using movements that are simultaneously precise and fluid...”

A self-taught dancer combining freestyle hip-hop with mime and contemporary dance, Kenichi Ebina incorporates visual illusion into his performances, making the impossible seem real. His agile, athletic and razor-sharp moves push the limits of human capability. Each of his performances is a mini-drama that draws from kinetic and thematic inspiration to tell a story that is laugh-out-loud funny.”

“The performances of the more seasoned artists such as Kenichi Ebina... represented the subtlety and mastery that comes with a maturing art form. Ebina and his group Bi-Triangle Performance (or BiTriP) base their unique style in hip hop, jazz, modern, and ethnic dance styles, and they incorporate magic, circus and illusion. While clearly coming from ‘somewhere else’ their mastery of the American movement vernacular makes them full-blooded citizens of hip hop.”

“Kenichi Ebina's dance troupe blends hip-hop, jazz and traditional Japanese dance styles into a high-energy mix. A one-of-a-kind dance performance.”
 - The Washington Post

"Hip-Hop, Poppin’, Lockin’, Mime, House, Jazz, Contemporary. Appearing on ‘Showtime at the Apollo’ in Harlem, Kenichi is the first and only two-time grand champion in the Apollo Theater’s history."
 - The Kennedy Center, Washington, D.C.

“Ebina blends several styles of dancing as well as martial arts into an interesting and fun style to watch. Slightly robotic, it amuses and astounds!”

“I remember the first time I saw Kenichi Ebina dance…
In college, at the University of Bridgeport, he had formed a dance group called Soul Beat, who performed by his choreography regularly at the various events in school. All of the guys were very good, but you couldn’t really take your eyes off of him. His body moved in ways that defied reality, it was unlike anything you’d ever seen. The sheer beauty of his dance seemed like it did not belong to earth!
I remember the chills going up my spine, and by the end of the performance I had tears in my eyes. I know it sounds a bit dramatic, but seeing such sophistication of talent can not leave you the same. I remember thinking, wow, God must exist and Kenichi’s talent must be the closest thing to God that I have ever seen. My friends were just as speechless as I was. I remember going up to him to tell him how much his performance moved me, but I couldn’t really express it with words… And he was the most modest person you’d ever meet.”
