Tangokinesis is a Buenos Aires-based company of 8-12 performers directed by choreographer Ana Maria Stekelman. The troupe has created an international sensation with recent performances at the American Dance Festival, Avignon Festival and Lyon Biennale de la Danse (France), the Israel Festival (Jerusalem), and in many multiple-performance engagements throughout Europe, Central and South America. Since its first extended U.S. tour in the fall of 1999, Tangokinesis has performed in more than 50 North American cities, including engagements at the "Celebrate Buenos Aires" Festival in New York City and at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. In March, 2006, the company made its Canadian debut with a two-performance engagement in Montreal.Ms. Stekelman, formerly the artistic director of the Ballet Contemporaneo del Teatro San Martín in Buenos Aires, formed her tango troupe in 1991. The company itself took the name of Ms. Stekelman's most successful work, Tangokinesis, which premiered in 1993. Invited to create new work at the American Dance Festival in 1976, 1978, and 1990, Ms. Stekelman is known for her choreography, which fuses the classic tango with contemporary dance. Commissions have come from Oscar Arais at the Rome Opera Ballet and from Julio Bocca's troupe, Ballet Argentino, which premiered the full-length "Boccatango" in 2004. In addition, she has choreographed dances for Spanish director Carlos Suara's Oscar-nominated film, "Tango," for which she was presented the "American Choreography Award" by the Academy of Dance on Film in Los Angeles. In addition to the traditional tango music of Astor Piazzolla, Ms. Stekelman has choreographed her dances to the (recorded) music of Chopin and Vivaldi and to the street sounds of modern urban life. For next season, the company proposes touring its new production, "Lentejuelos" (music by George Gershwin and others) and such selections as "Bolero," "Suite de Tango" and "Tango, Vals, Tango." "A swirl of dancing that's sophisticated, sassy, and fun. Her dances have elements of both fantasy and inevitability that make them both fascinating and satisfying. The dancers were superb." - The Washington Post "Sizzling tango from Buenos Aires! Tangokinesis is both hot and cool - and worth a trip from anywhere. The dancers are simply elegant - smooth and silky. It's a kind of delicious summer confection." - Boulder News "They are already in a miss-them-at-your-own-risk category. By intermission, the packed house was on its feet, cheering." - Dance Magazine. VIDEOS: Suite de Tango Lentejuelas Bolero HOME TECH RIDER PHOTOS TOUR HISTORY REVIEWS COMPANY LINK INQUIRIES |
